모든 사물은 '물체'라는 외형의 개념과 그것을 구성하는 특질인 '물질'로 구성되어 있다. 그러나 일반적으로 물질은 '형태'를 수용하며 동시에 색깔, 촉감, 기능 등을 내포하는 명사로 쓰인다. 일례로 나무로 만든 '의자'는 4개의 다리를 가진 기능적 물체이지만 그것을 거푸집으로 삼는 물질은 '나무'인 셈이다. 하지만 이 의자를 단순한 '사물'로 보지 않고 미학적 차원에서 분류하면 소쉬르가 정의한 기호의 근본을 이루는 두 성분인 '기표'와 '기의'로 구분할 수 있다.

즉, 이 의자라는 기호에서의 기표는 누구나 쉽게 인지할 수 있고 이해가 되는 형질적 부분이다. 그것은 둥그렇거나 혹은 사각이거나, 아니면 다리가 없는 것일 수도 있으나 '의자'라는 물체의 본질은 달라지지 않는 기호의 표현이다. 그러나 기의는 이와 대조적으로 그 의자를 의자답게 하는 것을 포함한 비물체적, 비물질적, 언어적 관계성까지 광의 한다. 그리고 이 기표와 기의는 하나의 상징이나 기호 속에 표상되며 기의는 유동적인 내용을 지정함과 동시에 어떤 외적 조건에서도 자유로운 의미를 지닌다.

우리는 일상의 사물을 물질적 특성, 다시 말해 사물을 구성하는 물질뿐만 아니라 사물의 기능을 통해서도 물체의 정의와 용도를 인식하고 이해한다. 나무 책상을 보면 딱딱한 느낌이 날 것 같고 공부하는 모습을 상상하게 되고, 큰 배낭을 보면 무거울 것 같고 어디론가 걸어가는 상상을 하게 된다. 이렇듯 사물이 가진 기의는 표상된 기호로 완성되고 그 기호는 우리에게 끊임없이 여러 가지 개념을 던져준다. 물론 각 물체가 지니고 있는 물질적, 기능적 특성에 관한 일반적이고 보편적인 인식을 버린다면 물체가 지닌 기의를 보다 색다르게 받아들일 수 있다.

내 작업의 근간은 기호의 해체로부터 시작된다. 기본적으로 물체에서 인식되는 고정관념에서 벗어날 순 없을까라는 자문에서 출발한다. 사물을 이해하는 시각을 다른 방향으로 하면 어떨까라는 의문에서 비롯된다. 특히 사물의 물질적, 기능적 속성에서 이탈했을 때 비로소 자유롭게 상상할 수 있는 기회를 유효하게 하지 않을까를 생각한다. 그렇게 해서 탄생한 것이 작금 선보인 ‘Departure’ 연작이다.

사물의 속을 비워버리고 모양으로만 존재하게 했을 때 사물은 물질적 특성과 기능적 속성, 완성된 고유의 기호를 잃어버린다. 어떤 물체에 대한 인식적 형태가 유효하다면 여전히 우린 사물 고유의 기능을 지정하지만 그것의 본질은 사실 새로운 사물로 치환되었다 해도 그르지 않다. 가방은 가방이지만 가방이 가방의 기능을 상실한 순간 관념성과 물질로 인한 기호성은 와해되고 해체되며 여기서 물체의 본질은 보다 자유로워질 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 고정인식에 대한 해체는 항상 안을 볼 수 없다고 생각했거나 안이 보이지 않는 것에 의심 없는 상황에서 더욱 증폭된다. 개념이 탈개념화 됨으로써 진정한 개념성을 띠는 셈이다.

나의 작업은 위와 같은 맥락에서 관심 있는 사물에 적용된다. 그중 하나가 여행용 가방과 큰 박스들이며, 주제는 ‘Departure’이다. 이와 같은 주제는 떠남의 의미를 나타내기 위해 공항에서 볼 수 있는 글자 ‘Departure’를 그대로 빌려왔다.

작업의 동기는 삶의 공간이 자주 바뀌었던 지난 시간을 바탕으로 한다. 물리적이지만 이미 지나가버려 의미화 된 시공을 밑동으로 한다. 나는 언제나 공항에서 오고 가는 사람들이 가지고 다니는 가방이 궁금했다. 비슷한 가방을 들고 다니지만 공항에서 만나는 사람들의 가방은 무엇인가 다르게 보였고, 가방마다 담긴 이야기가 다를 것 같아 유독 공항에서 만나는 사람들의 이야기가 궁금해지곤 했다. 일반 거리에서조차 여행용 가방이나 큰 박스를 볼 때마다 나도 모르게 여행자의 들뜬 마음, 바쁘게 움직이는 사람의 분주함, 사랑하는 사람과 헤어지는 슬픔, 새로운 삶을 향해 떠나는 듯한 긴장과 설렘 등 여러 감정이 교차하는 그 미묘한 감정에 사로잡힌바있다.
그러한 감정과 기억들을 거두기 위해 이번 작품들은 여행용 가방과 큰 박스를 유리테이프로 만들어 속을 비우고 모양으로만 떠내어 실루엣으로 표현했다. 가방이라는 양태적 개념은 인식의 범주에 있지만 실제 가방의 용도는 가능하지 않다는 점에서 기의의 폭을 확장시켰다. 특히 여행용 가방과 박스는 대부분 불투명이라는 것에 착안하여 작품의 내부를 투명하게 처리함으로써 관람객들이 그 빈 공간에 무엇이든 새롭게 담을 수 있도록 했다. 따라서 ‘Departure’연작은 다양한 층위의 상상력과 저마다 다른 해석이 가능할 수 있는 흥미로운 창으로 자리한다. 그건 단지 가방이 아니라 해체된 기호 속 복잡하고 개별적인 기의의 부유를 거둬들이는 공간인 셈이다.■

All things are composed of concept of appearance called 'object' and the characteristics, 'materials'. However, generally materials are used as noun having 'shape' and at the same time including color, texture, function, and so on. For an example, 'chair' made by wood is a functional object with four legs but the material of its mold is wood. Classifying 'chairs' in the aesthetic level, not seeing simply as 'things', they are able to be divided to 'signifier' and 'signified' that are tow components consisting of the base of symbol defined by Saussure.

That is, 'signifier' of chair is a part of form and quality which anybody is able to understand easily. It can be round or rectangular or no legs but the nature of the object of 'chair' is expression of symbol of no change. However, 'signified', contrasting this, broadly means up to non-object, non-material, and linguistic relations including what makes it like a chair. And 'signifier' and 'signified' body forth in a symbol or mark and the signified designates fluidal content and at the same time has free meanings in any outside condition.

We understand definition and use of objects through function of things as well as
materials consisting of the things, characteristic as materials. Seeing a wood desk, it feels hard and we imagine studying and seeing a big backpack, it feels heavy and we imagine walking to somewhere. Like this, the signified of things is completed with the signifier represented and the symbol keeps giving me many concept endlessly. Of course if we throw away the general, universal recognition on the material, functional characteristics which each object has, we can receive the signified of object differently.

The base of my works starts from decomposition of symbol. It starts from self-questioning of escaping from the fixed idea recognized in things. It comes from the question of changing the view of understanding object to other directions. Especially, when escaping from the material, functional nature of things, I think, finally we can have a chance to imagine freely. What was born by this is a series of Departure presenting today.

When emptying inside of object and it exists only in a shape, things are losing material characteristics, functional nature, and completed its own symbol. If a cognitive form is valid on a certain object, we still designate its own function of a things but it's not wrong even if is nature is replaced by new things. Bag is bag but as soon as a bag loses its function, the symbol by conceptuality and materials falls to pieces and disassembled and whence nature of object becomes free. Decomposition on the fixed idea is amplified in the situation of thinking not able to see inside or the undoubtful situation of not seeing inside. As concept is escaping from the concept, the real concept is established.
My works is applied to interesting things in the context. One of them is the travel bad and big boxes and the theme is ‘Departure’. The theme borrows the letter, Departure' that can be seen in airports to express the meaning of leaving.

The movie of works is based on the past when life space was often changed, which is physical but underlying the time and space meaned by passed by already. I was always curious about bags which people were carrying in airports. They were carrying similar bags but the bags that people in airports looked differently and I thought that the stories contained in each bag would be different so I wondered their stories those who I met in airport particularly. Even in the common street, whenever I saw a travel bag or a big box, I was captured by the subtile emotion that many emotions are crossed over like travellers' excitement, busyness of fast moving people, sadness of leaving loving one, tension to leave for new life and thrill, and so on.
To harvest such emotions and memories, the works emptied the inside by casting travel bags and big boxes with glass tape and molded out to express its silhouette. Concept of quantity and quality of a bag is in the rage of recognition but the breadth of signified was expanded in the point of the use of an actual bag are not able. Especially considering that most traveller's bags and boxes are not transparent, by making the inside of works transparent, the audience was able to contain anything in the empty space newly. Hence, the series of Departure is a interesting window that diverse levels of imagination and each different interpretation are able. It is a space harvesting floaters of complicated, individual signified in the decomposed symbol not only a bag.
